Chappell Roan shares new country single ‘The Giver’

Chappell Roan has released her new single, ‘The Giver’, after debuting it on Saturday Night Live last November and sharing a series of teasers on social media.

The upbeat country track is the singer’s first single since last year’s ‘Good Luck, Babe!’, before which she released a string of songs from her debut, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, including ‘Hot To Go!’, ‘Casual’, and ‘Femininomenon’.

‘The Giver’, produced by Dan Nigro, is a slight deviation from her other pop hits, taking on a more anthemic, upbeat country feel as she sings, “You ain’t got to tell me, It’s just in my nature, So take it like a taker, ’cause baby, I’m a giver, Ain’t no need to hurry, ’cause baby, I deliver, Ain’t no country boy quitter, I get the job done.”

Despite the anticipation in the build-up to its release, Roan addressed the change in tone and how some fans might be concerned she is taking a different direction to the beloved sound that defined songs like ‘Good Luck, Babe!’

Appearing Today’s Country Radio With Kelleigh Bannen on Apple Music, she said she “really just did it for fun”, promising fans that she’s “not switching genres or anything” and “wanted to write a country song because I just thought it would be funny.”

She also admitted that Big & Rich’s ‘Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)’ was a major inspiration for the track, particularly when it came to how she wanted to feel when she walked out on stage and performed it. “I was like, ‘I want to write that song, but Chappell’s version,'” she said.

Roan also elaborated on her appreciation for the song on her Instagram, saying, “It is def a bold and scary move to release a full ass country song after only releasing one song last year and it having such a success in the pop genre.” However, she also noted how it’s “the entire point of Chappell Roan”, adding that it’s all about being a “popstar girl then pop an edible +watch YouTube vibes”.

Discussing her appreciation for country music, she described the genre as “fire” and “the campiest of camp”. In her view, some might feel turned off by it because it’s unfamiliar, but she urged fans to give it “another shot” while thanking “all the country divas who came before me”.

‘The Giver’ is being released with five 7-inch limited edition vinyl, each boasting the different characters within the song, including a dentist, lawyer, and private investigator. These were each teased on billboards around cities like New York and Los Angeles prior to release.
