Chappell Roan reassures fans she won’t be switching genres

Chappell Roan has reassured fans that she won’t be switching genres ahead of the release of her new country-inspired single ‘The Giver’.

The Grammy Award-winner appeared on an episode of Today’s Country Radio With Kelleigh Bannen on Apple Music to promote her new single and explain its country-inspired origins. “I really just did it for fun,” Roan said. “I’m not switching genres or anything. I wanted to write a country song because I just thought it would be funny. It’s campy and fun.”

She expanded on her love of country music, citing her upbringing in southwest Missouri as a reason. Roan explained how she “grew up on Christian and country, and then found ‘Alejandro’ by Lady Gaga and I was like, ‘I think I like this, too.’ So, I have kept country in my heart. And it’s so incredibly nostalgic to drive in West Hollywood and [play] Jason Aldean or Alan Jackson’s ‘Chattahoochee.’”

Roan debuted the song on Saturday Night Live in November and has since teased it’s release on social media posts and billboard campaigns across America.

Ever since, fans have been speculating about the creative direction of the song and whether it is the beginning of a new country era for the singer.

Those concerns were amplified when Roan took to Instagram to announce ‘The Giver’ was, in fact, a departure from pop music: “I have such a special place in my heart for country music,” she wrote. “I grew up listening to it every morning and afternoon on my school bus and had it swirling around me at bon fires, grocery stores and karaoke bars. Many people have asked if this means I’m making a country album???”

Roan continued: “My answer is.. hmm right now I’m just making songs that make me feel happy and fun and The Giver is my take on cuntry xoxo may the classic country divas lead their genre, I am just here to twirl and do a little gay yodel for yall.”

‘The Giver’ is set for release on March 13th.
