Chappell Roan apologises for Brigitte Bardot tribute: “I do not condone this”

Chappell Roan has apologised for sharing a tribute on social media to the controversial late French cinematic icon Brigitte Bardot.

Bardot died in Saint-Tropez, France, on December 28th, 2025, aged 91, and has left behind a complicated legacy due to her embrace of far-right politics after retiring from the film industry.

As a result of Bardot’s controversies, tributes to her were noticeably light on social media. However, Roan took to Instagram Stories on December 28th to write, “Rest in peace Ms. Bardot. She was my inspiration for red wine supernova”.

In ‘Red Wine Supernova’, which appeared on The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, Roan sings, “She was a playboy, Brigitte Bardot, She showed me things I didn’t know”.

A day later, Roan took to Instagram Stories to walk back her tribute, writing, “Holy shit I did not know all that insane shit Ms. Bardot stood for. I do not condone this. Very disappointing to learn.”

Notably, between 1997 and 2008, Bardot was taken to court five times on charges of inciting racial hatred due to Islamophobic comments. Additionally, she made incredibly homophobic comments in her 2003 memoir, A Cry in the Silence, and also attacked unemployed people in the same book.

Bardot’s controversies also include writing in her 1996 memoir that she would have “preferred to give birth to a little dog” rather than her son Nicolas-Jacques, which led to her having to pay damages to her only child.

Furthermore, Bardot was a vocal supporter of Marine Le Pen and once labelled the far-right National Rally leader “the Joan of Arc of the 21st century”.

In one of her final interviews, given earlier this year, Bardot told BMFTV, “Feminism is not my thing”. She also denounced the MeToo movement, adding, “People with talent who grab a girl’s bottom are thrown into the bottom of the ditch. We could at least let them carry on living. They can’t live any more.”
