Cameron Winter reveals father’s scathing remarks about new Geese album

Geese have enjoyed a hugely positive reception for their new album, Getting Killed. However, frontman Cameron Winter has revealed that his biggest critic is his own father.

The Brooklyn band, who released their third studio album Getting Killed in September, spoke to Zane Lowe about the process of recording the album and the project’s subsequent reception.

Near the end of the discussion, singer-songwriter Winter admitted that his father, who also has a musical background, often gives the band great advice for their compositions. However, he can also be relatively cut-throat when it comes to his reception to their more experimental work.

After acknowledging what a “huge privilege” it was for his father to give him the musical equipment to begin his musical career, Winter revealed, “He had a whole range of first impressions [to Getting Killed].”

He added, “I think he gives me the benefit of the doubt now more than he used to as he can see things are working out relatively good. He can be scratching his head sometimes at some of the things. He can be like, ‘people are going to be irritated by this stuff.'”

Laughingly, the 23-year-old went on imitating his father, “Like, ‘are you trying to make them turn it off just as an artistic statement?’ Like, no, dad. ‘Is this considered cool to assault the audience with unpleasant noises?'”

Winter fired back at his dad, saying, “That’s not my intention,” before admitting, “I low-key love him, too.”

Getting Killed was Far Out‘s ‘Album of the Week’, receiving an admirable four-and-a-half-star review. Far Out observed: “The result of which is a heightened humanisation of the records, more tender takes, making it at times, a fitting voice for this obscure new age of indie. Somewhere between humorous, obscure and outright despondent, he, along with the rest of this band, has become a bastion of twisted hope on Getting Killed.”

Recently, the band covered the classic New Radicals hit, ‘You Get What You Give’ in the BBC Live Lounge. They are currently undertaking a North American tour.
