Bruce Springsteen reflects on health issue that caused tour cancellation: “An unusual experience”
Bruce Springsteen has discussed his forthcoming documentary, Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, and explained his decision to omit his health struggles from the film
Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band is available to watch on Hulu and Disney+. It captures his latest world tour between 2023 and 2024, providing never-before-seen insight into his touring operation.
For the project, Springsteen teamed up with Thom Zimny, who previously directed Springsteen on Broadway. However, one part of the tour that isn’t mentioned is the health struggles faced by Springsteen that caused him to postpone several dates in North America.
In September 2023, Springsteen postponed all of his remaining tour dates for the calendar year due to peptic ulcer disease. Thankfully, he made a full recovery and returned to the road in 2024 for another busy summer of touring with the E Street Band.
Now, in a new interview with Variety, Springsteen explained that his health issues weren’t given airtime in the documentary, stating, “I didn’t think my peptic ulcer was film-worthy, so we left it out.”
Springsteen continued: “I actually enjoyed the time off, but you hate disappointing your fans. And it actually took a while for the whole thing to calm down and give back to myself. So it was an unusual experience, because I’m usually pretty ironclad. But no, we never considered it making it part of this story.”
While he was at home recovering in 2023, Springsteen recorded a special show for SiriusXM’s From My Home To Yours, and said of his illness: “I am deeply sorry but this belly thing, despite my ability to laugh at it, has been a monster and is still unfortunately rocking my internal world.”
Springsteen has a busy year ahead, including a huge summer tour that will see him visit the United Kingdom to perform three shows at the Co-op Live in Manchester and two concerts at Anfield Stadium in Liverpool. He will also play dates across Europe in France, Germany, the Czech Republic, Italy, and Spain.
