Edinburgh-born singer Brooke Combe has unveiled her latest single, the supremely soulful ‘A-Game’.
Just the second single Combe has released, ‘A-Game’ comes on the heels of her debut ‘Are You With Me?’, a fiercely energetic romp that highlights Combe’s powerful voice. Whereas ‘Are You With Me?’ announces its presence with aplomb, ‘A-Game’ slows things down and kills you with slick stylish funk, featuring slinky guitar work and plenty of space and atmosphere in the arrangement.
“When I was writing A-Game I was delving into what it was like being with someone purely for lighthearted fun,” Combe explains. “However, when you start to notice that this person is having such a good effect on you that you question whether or not you want more. Nobody knew the full extent of the relationship and we both felt we had to keep it on the down low which essentially, made it more fun.”
Combe got her to start posting covers to social media, including a take on the Scottish men’s football team’s unofficial Euro 2020 song, Baccara’s ‘Yes Sir, I Can Boogie’. While it might not have been enough to push Scotland into the knockout round, it was enough to get Combe noticed. Soon she found herself working with The Coral’s James Skelly on her first singles.
Recorded in Liverpool back in 2020, which is obviously the Neo-soul capital of England, Combe pairs up with Blossom’s Chaz Salt and Manchester drummer Aden Peets to create the spacey backing track. The results are about as cool and relaxed R&B gets, with an amorous feeling floating over Combe’s lyrical admiration of the partner who keeps her on her toes. If this is what Combe sounds like as a newcomer, I can’t wait to hear what she sounds like as a confident and fully formed artist.
