The Brit Awards censor Geese during ceremony: “Free Palestine, Fuck ICE, go Geese!”
Geese drummer Max Bassin was censored by ITV during the Brit Awards after his band won ‘Best International Group’.
The New York band defeated competition from Tame Impala, Turnstile, Huntr/X, and Haim to win their very first Brit Award, which took place at the Co-op Live in Manchester.
However, drummer Bassin had his speech cut short by broadcasters when he declared, “Free Palestine, Fuck ICE, RIP Mani, go Geese!”
Prior to that, Bassin was heard saying, “What’s up the Brits, I just want to say…” before he was censored by the television channel.
Earlier in the show, host Jack Whitehall had poked fun at the Baftas for failing to censor tourette’s activist John Davidson, telling those in Manchester at the Brits, We’ve got the best in the business here tonight (for bleeping swear words), we’ve got the guy from the Baftas.”
Similarly, at the Baftas, the BBC cut Akinola Davies Jr’s speech short after he declared support for Palestine after winning ‘Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer’ alongside his brother Wale Davies for their work on My Father’s Shadow.
In his speech, which wasn’t aired on television, Davies Jr said, “Archive your loved ones. Archive your stories yesterday, today, and forever. For Nigeria, for London, the Congo, Sudan, free Palestine.”
Davies Jr later said of the editorial decision, “I do think it’s a shame, because we’ve protested for the last three or four years trying to show solidarity with the people of Palestine, we’ve had some of the largest political solidarity demonstrations in the UK.”
