“Pestering them for years”: how Brie Larson landed her dream role

In 2026, Brie Larson achieved an acting dream.

The Oscar winner was given the chance to voice Princess Rosalina in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. A huge fan of the franchise, she once famously broke up with a boyfriend because he mocked her for playing the game the film is based on. For Larson, the role felt like a proper full-circle moment, something that does not happen very often in Hollywood. However, for her, these kinds of moments seem to occur fairly regularly.

Three years prior to her trip around the galaxy, Larson joined another massive franchise full of unrealistic action and ludicrous caricatures. The Fast & Furious series celebrated its tenth instalment, Fast X, by bringing in a host of big names, like Jason Momoa, Pete Davidson, and Rita Moreno (yes, really) for more high-octane action, and Larson also made her debut, something she had been waiting a long time to do.

“This has been my dream!” she excitedly exclaimed during an interview with Shane the Gamer. “I’ve been basically begging to be in these movies for years. Actually, I have a video of me running around my house squealing when I finally got the news that I was going to be part of this franchise because I hold it in great esteem.”

Larson’s character, Tess, is the daughter of the established Fast character, Mr Nobody (Kurt Russell), who ends up as part of Dominic Toretto’s (Vin Diesel) motley crew of attractive weirdos as they set out to stop Dante Reyes (Momoa), the son of a drug lord who had been foiled in a previous film.

According to the Captain Marvel star, she had always wanted to join this (say it with me now) “family” and devised an elegant strategy to get her foot in the door.

“The process was basically me pestering them for years,” she explained, “As time went on and they were building out this film and what the future could be, they finally said, ‘There’s space for you. You can come to the table with us’.”

While we can’t say for sure that this was down to Larson’s involvement, Fast X ended up being something of a disappointment. I’m not talking about the quality of the film, that’s irrelevant in a series where cars can fly into space, but rather from a financial standpoint. Despite ending the year as the fifth highest-grossing movie, thanks to a very strong performance in China, it was weighed down by an enormous budget, and at a cost of $378.8million, it is one of the most expensive movies ever made.

Fans will have to wait until 2028 to see if Larson returns for the next instalment, Fast Forever, and if she does, she could be part of one of the most star-studded casts in film history. Not only do we have all the returning names to contend with, but also any other huge celebrities they can rustle up. That pool is not just limited to actors, as Diesel revealed he had written a part specifically for footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, and I’d be lying if I said I’m not desperate to see how that plays out.
