Brian May believes The Last Dinner Party are “new British rock royalty”

Queen’s Brian May has praised The Last Dinner Party, calling the British band “the new British rock royalty.”

Since they released their debut single, ‘Nothing Matters’, in 2023, the five-piece have quickly risen to prominence, and received a Mercury Prize nomination for their album, Prelude to Ecstasy, along with amassing a large fanbase that even includes guitar legends like May.

The Last Dinner Party formed in 2021, gaining attention through their live shows in the London scene. It didn’t take them long to land some rather impressive opportunities, like appearing on a bill alongside The Rolling Stones at Hyde Park before they’d even recorded a song.

However, once they finally released the baroque pop ‘Nothing Matters’, the band gained instant acclaim. Noted for their cohesive sound and aesthetic, the group established an eager following from the get-go, leading them to get to work on an album, which was released less than a year after their debut single.

Prelude to Ecstasy earned the band a Mercury Prize nomination, and they won the ‘Rising Star’ accolade at the Brit Awards. Their popularity has happened fast – a testament to their dedication to crafting a sonic and visual world that is instantly recognisable as theirs.

May was deeply impressed by the band’s performance at Eventim Apollo in London, posting a picture of him with the group on Instagram. He wrote in his caption: “I got to meet the new British Rock Royalty tonight – The Last Dinner Party – and they completely smashed it tonight at the Eventim Apollo. What a great show! What a joy!!! Thanks Emily for inviting me. That was just what I needed – a good ol’ dose of Rock Tonic. Folks, you have to see these guys!”

Brain May is on the road to recovery following stroke

May noted that the concert was “just what I needed,” referring to the fact that he has recently suffered some health issues that he is currently recovering from. He revealed to fans that he had a stroke in September, telling his Instagram followers, “I’m here to bring you first of all some news, I think. The good news is that I can play guitar after the events of the last few days.”

His wife, Anita Dobson, updated The Sun during the This Is Icon awards, explaining that “He’s doing great – he’s on the road, he’s doing really, really well. We’re very pleased.” She also stated that she believes May will be able to “make a full recovery.”
