Brian Cox and Nicola Coughlan auctioning items to raise money for Gazan students
Brian Cox and Nicola Coughlan are among 20 public figures who are auctioning personal items to raise money for students in Gaza.
The fundraising efforts have been sparked since the UK government previously announced that it would help students from the country to travel to study in Britain, as long as they have fully-funded scholarships for their chosen university.
As such, the charity Phoenix Space has co-ordinated a major auction of items, notably including a signed behind-the-scenes photograph from the set of Derry Girls from Coughlan and her co-star Siobhán McSweeney.
Elsewhere, Paapa Essiedu, who is playing Professor Snape in the upcoming HBO television remake of Harry Potter, is also donating his own personal copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone to the auction.
According to Variety, the actor said in a statement: “I can’t imagine almost all universities being destroyed and the immense talent in every discipline wasted: no opportunities and no choice at all.”
He added, “What a beautiful thing if this book in some way can unlock the futures of these brilliant students, too.”
Elsewhere, stars from across a range of different entertainment disciplines, including Cox, Paloma Faith, Maxine Peake, and Gary Lineker, have also donated items.
Peake’s contribution is a production hoodie from I Swear, the critically acclaimed biopic about Tourette’s campaigner John Davidson, which she starred in as Dottie Achenbach.
The auction is available to view via the Scholarships for Gaza website, with bidding beginning on July 27th and lasting for ten days.
