Bonnie Tyler wakes up from coma, remains “very unwell and in intensive care”
Bonnie Tyler‘s management have issued a new health update after she was placed into a coma in May.
Tyler underwent emergency intestinal surgery in the Algarve, where she has a home, after feeling unwell. Subsequently, she was placed into a coma and fell into cardiac arrest when medical staff previously tried to bring her out of the coma.
Now, in a fresh update, five weeks after she entered the hospital, her family and team shared in a statement on her website, “Bonnie is no longer in a coma but remains very unwell and in intensive care in a hospital in Portugal. Although her condition is improving it is a slow process.”
On a positive note, they stated that “doctors remain confident that she will make a good recovery but it is going to take time.”
However, due to Tyler’s ill health, her summer live shows have either been cancelled or postponed until 2027. She had been scheduled to visit Germany, Türkiye, Czechia, Hungry and Romania, as well as appear at two UK festivals this summer.
They explained, “As such we are sorry to tell everyone that we will be cancelling, or postponing until next year where possible, all of our remaining shows this summer. This will affect every current show until the end of August. At present we are still hopeful that our shows in the autumn will go ahead.”
The message added, “We would like to thank everyone for the huge outpouring of love and support from all over the world that we have received for Bonnie and want to tell you that she is aware of, and very grateful for, your good wishes.”
They also stated that Tyler’s family “continue to ask for privacy” during these difficult times and revealed more updates will follow.
While Tyler didn’t get hospitalised until May, it was previously reported in Portugal’s Correio de Manhã that she initially fell ill in March when she returned to the United Kingdom for a concert at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire and sought medical assistance upon returning to the Algarve.
Tyler was awarded an MBE for her services to music in 2023, and also represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest a decade earlier.
Upon accepting her MBE, Tyler said it was an even greater achievement than being nominated for three Grammys, stating, “I never ever thought I would have something like this, my mother and father would be so proud. To be nominated for a Grammy was wonderful, but to be given an MBE for something I absolutely love doing is a highlight of my career.”
