Bonnie Tyler undergoes emergency surgery in Portugal

Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler was rushed to hospital in Portugal to undergo emergency intestinal surgery.

Following the surgery, Tyler, aged 74, is now recovering after the emergency surgery and has issued a health update to fans.

A statement issued on the ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ singer’s website reads, “We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery.”

It continued, “The surgery went well and she is now recuperating. We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”

Tyler, who released her debut album The World Starts Tonight in 1977, has been a mainstay in the music business throughout the last six decades and remains active today.

As it stands, her website still lists shows later this month which are due to take place in Malta and Germany.

Tyler is then due to play more summer shows throughout Germany in June and July, as well as visits to Türkiye, Czechia, Hungry and Romania. She is also set to perform at Summer End’s Angus in Scotland and the Sunshine Festival in England.

Notably, Tyler was awarded an MBE for her services to music in 2023, and also represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest a decade earlier.

Upon accepting her MBE, Tyler said it was an even greater achievement than being nominated for three Grammys, stating, “I never ever thought I would have something like this, my mother and father would be so proud. To be nominated for a Grammy was wonderful, but to be given an MBE for something I absolutely love doing is a highlight of my career.”

Tyler’s most recent album, The Best Is Yet to Come, arrived in 2021.
