Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Mickey 17’ starring Robert Pattinson receives 2025 release date

Two years after the project was announced, Warner Bros have announced a 2025 release date for Bong Joon-ho‘s adaptation of Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson.

A teaser trailer for the sci-fi arrived in late 2022, with a spring 2024 release date attached before the film was delayed by post-production and industry strikes. The film is now finally set to hit theatres on January 31st, 2025, almost a year after initially intended.

Mickey 17 is based on Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel, Mickey7. It will follow Pattinson as the titular character, an expendable sent on a mission to colonise another world. If an expendable dies, they are simply replaced with a new version. The star-studded supporting cast features Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, Naomi Ackie and Mark Ruffalo.

The project will mark Bong’s first feature since the mammoth success of Parasite in 2019, which earned him a ‘Best Director’ win at the Academy Awards ceremony in 2020. It also became the first film not in the English language to take home the ‘Best Picture’ title.

Since then, Bong has worked on a producer of the Snowpiercer television series, an adaptation of his 2013 film of the same name. The show ran for two seasons and came to an end in the spring of 2022.

Pattinson has had a busy few years of his own, starring in Christopher Nolan’s time-bending Tenet and Matt Reeves’ Academy Award-nominated DC adaptation, The Batman.
