Bong Joon-ho calls for greater investigation into Lee Sun-kyun’s death
Parasite director Bong Joon-ho has demanded an investigation into the death of late South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun.
The actor was found in his car on December 27th, with his death being ruled a suicide. Yonhap News Agency claimed that a letter “akin to a suicide note” was found alongside his body.
Sun-kyun’s death came following a highly publicised illegal drug investigation, with the actor being accused of using marijuana in various nightclubs in Seoul. The media scrutinised the Parasite star for months. Lee previously said of the case while it was ongoing: “I’ve finished the questioning by the police about the blackmail case. I hope the police wisely determine which statements are more reliable between mine and the blackmailers.”
Now, during a recent press conference, Bong stated: “I demand that the authorities investigate. We demand that the police investigate whether there was any lapse in the security of the investigation from the moment the details of the deceased’s investigation were first exposed until two months later.”
He added: “We want to know if there was no individual media contact during the investigation, and we want the results to be made public so that there is no doubt.”
Other figures at the conference included the head of the Producer’s Guild of Korea, Choi Jeong-hwa, CEO of the entertainment company Mystic Story, Yoon Jong-shin, and actor Choi Deok-moon.
Bong also commented, “His three police appearances, from the simple reagent test to the negative test, were broadcast live to the media. Recordings of his incriminating statements were released to the media and public, and he made the tragic choice to end his life after a third 19-hour police summons.”
