Björk defends Greenland after Donald Trump’s threats: “I wish all Greenlanders blessing in their fight for independence”
Following recent comments by President Donald Trump regarding the future of Greenland, Björk has made an impassioned case for the country’s independence.
After the US carried out a seize of Venezuela over the weekend and arrested President Nicolás Maduro, Trump has reiterated his desire for the US to take control of Greenland.
Trump said, “We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it.”
Since then, Trump has been criticised by Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, who wrote on social media, “Threats, pressure and talk of annexation have no place between friends.”
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has also called for Trump to stop talk about taking over Greenland, and has been supported by the UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Rather than pledge her support for the ongoing Danish rule in Greenland, Björk has instead called for the country to become independent. The Icelandic star began her Instagram statement by writing, “I wish all Greenlanders blessing in their fight for independence.”
She then attacked the Danish regime, which has ruled Greenland for more than 300 years, adding, “Icelanders are extremely relieved that they managed to break from the Danish in 1944, we didn’t loose our language (my children would be speaking Danish now) and I burst with sympathy for Greenlanders, repeatedly”.
The singer then highlighted the forced contraception scheme that Denmark ran in Greenland against young Inuit women during the 1960s and ’70s, for which Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen issued a long-awaited apology in 2025.
She also alleged “still today the Danish are treating Greenlanders like they are second class humans” and are “removing children from their parents in 2025”.
Björk added of colonialism, “Colonialism has repeatedly given me horror chills up my back, and the chance that my fellow Greenlanders might go from one cruel colonizer to another is too brutal to even imagine. ‘Úr öskunni í eldinn,’ like we say in Icelandic.” ‘Úr öskunni í eldinn’ translates to, ‘From the ashes into the fire.’
The singer signed off by writing, “Dear Greenlanders, declare independence !!!! Sympathetic wishes from your neighbors. Warmthness.”
