Billy Corgan reveals his role at Black Sabbath farewell show

Smashing Pumpkins frontman and guitarist Billy Corgan has recently revealed his role in the Black Sabbath farewell concert, and shared details on who he will be performing alongside.

The legendary heavy metal act announced that they will be performing one final show this summer. A large number of names from the rock world will join them on the bill for their appearance at Villa Park in Birmingham on July 5th.

With other titans of metal, such as Metallica, Slayer, and Gojira, all confirmed to be playing, a number of individual musicians have been announced for the concert. They will form a supergroup that continually rotates its members throughout. Corgan has been announced as part of this, with others, including Sammy Hagar, Tom Morello, and Chad Smith, all named among a stellar cast.

Now, in an interview with NME, Corgan has revealed that he has been placed together with Morello and Tool’s Adam Jones as part of the legendary performance.

“Adam, Tom and I all grew up in the same sort of general vicinity,” Corgan explained to the publication. “Tom had this idea – what he calls ‘The Illinois Boys’ – that The Illinois Boys would get together and play, so that’s cool. I love it. I’m very fond and love Adam’s music and playing and I’ve known Tom for 30 years or so, so it’s a cool thing.”

Speaking further about his excitement for playing at the farewell concert for his “favourite all-time band”, he said: “It’s going to be magical. There’s so much love out there for Ozzy. It all comes together on this one magical night. It’s what rock’n’roll is supposed to be about. That’s kinda what I was harping about: it’s ultimately a celebration rather than, ‘Let’s talk about what happened in 1972’.”

Despite excitement for the show, some fans have expressed concern about the farewell concert due to the recent announcements about Ozzy Osbourne’s ill health. Osbourne, who is 76, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2018, and has recently declared that he “can’t walk”.
