Billy Bragg says Donald Trump is a “blaring horn that never switches off”
Billy Bragg has lashed out at Donald Trump and called for the general public to support Together Alliance’s march against the far-right in central London, which is taking place on March 28th.
Bragg will perform on the speakers’ stage at the event, and has shared his stance on the worsening state of global politics with The Guardian.
He mused, “I think we’re in a situation where the idea of universal rights, the sort of postwar settlement after the Holocaust where we realised that rights had to belong to individuals if they were going to be protected … is being severely challenged by a policy that you might call ‘might is right’, where the strongest do what they want to the weakest.”
As such, amid current political circumstances, Bragg deemed the President of the United States a “blaring horn that never switches off”.
Bragg, who is calling for political unity and community, sees Trump as the antithesis to this approach: “He’s like a constant reminder of the cruel realities of the politics of division,” he stated.
The event will include cross-party speakers and award-winning musicians like Self Esteem, Jessie Ware, Katy B, Joy Crookes, UB40, Fontaines DC, the Charlatans, and Hot Chip.
It has been publicly supported by the likes of actors Steve Coogan and Christopher Eccleston, and musicians Paloma Faith and Brian Eno, as well as countless more stars.
Bragg underlined the importance of coming together at a time of global fracture: “You see a lot of people out on the streets marching for the kind of politics that you want,” he said.
He went on, “And you feel, for a moment, you feel seen. You feel that your concerns are legitimate. And that’s a really important thing. It’s the start of something.”
Bragg has always used his platform for political activism. Recently, he released the song ‘City of Heroes‘, which was a charged political ballad in support of anti-ICE protestors in Minneapolis.
