Billie Eilish continues to tease her highly anticipated sophomore studio album, Happier Than Ever, and has released her new track ‘Lost Cause’.
The latest effort arrives along with an official music video, also directed by the seven-time Grammy Award-winning artist. ‘Lost Cause’ follows the announcement of Eilish’s recently confirmed world arena tour, the Happier Than Ever, The World Tour, which has since sold out on all dates of the first leg in North America, Europe and the United Kingdom, including five nights at The O2 in London.
The new video, directed by Eilish herself, features a a strange mix between a photo shoot and a sleep over. Mostly just a gaggle of friends hanging out and belting along with ‘Lost Cause’, it’s an enjoyable, fairly low-stakes affair.
The song itself is classic Eilish: sparse arranging, likely provided by brother/producer extraordinaire Finneas, but bubbling with a funky, R&B sort of energy that I haven’t really heard any of her previous material. It’s a left turn that suits Eilish whispery, titling voice well. “Thought you had your shit together but damn I was wrong” is sure to hit someone w may or may never know right between the eyes.
The “S-tier” comment isn’t in jest either: last night, me and my friends were discussing who was the most famous person in the world over drinks. Some standard names came up: Donald Trump, Cristiano Renaldo, Beyonce. But we all agreed on Billie Eilish as well: an 19 year old prodigy who’s so universally well known that she can realistically stand toe to toe with just about any notable face in the world.
I also mentioned that writing Billie Eilish writeups was fruitless because we couldn’t break anything new. If a Billie Eilish song is out, and you’re a fan, you’ve heard it faster than my fingers can furiously type. But perhaps the best indication of her status: in order to be on top of news about Eilish, you have to literally follow it, and her, minute by minute.
Check out the video for ‘Lost Cause’ down below. Happier than Ever is set for a July 30 release and will probably be the album of the summer. Just guessing.
For now though, enjoy the latest single.
To kick the tour off, Eilish’s run of dates will start on February 3, 2022 with a performance at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. Moving across North American with a string of dates, tour will close with a three-night residencey at the Los Angeles Forum.
Crossing the Atlantic, Eilish will first head to Ireland to perform at Dublin’s 3Arena on June 4 and 5. From there, the tour includes no fewer than 18 performances in the United Kingdom and Europe.
The singer-songwriter has also confirmed she will be continuing her work with sustainability partner REVERB for Happier Than Ever, with the fan-facing Billie Eilish Action Village at each show which will focus on climate action and climate justice, hosting and supporting BIPOC and women-led environmental organisations as well as a comprehensive program via REVERB’s forthcoming Music Climate Revolution campaign.
In addition to reducing the tour’s environmental footprint, the initiative will support projects that directly and measurably eliminate greenhouse gases. These collective efforts will make the tour Climate Positive; eliminating significantly more emissions than the tour creates.
