Bella Ramsey reveals they’ve been writing “mental health” movie for the last six years
Breakout star of The Last Of Us, Bella Ramsey, has revealed they have been working on a feature film since the age of 14. Now at age 20, they hope to bring it to the big screen in the near future.
Ramsey has taken the film and television industry by storm. Their role as Ellie in The Last Of Us earned them a Golden Globe nomination, while they also made the 2023 BAFTA Breakthrough list.
Discussing the plot for their first written project, Ramsey revealed the movie is a “scary” take on mental health, shining a light on issues in a left-field way. “I started writing it when I was 14,” they told Attitude. “It centres around mental health. But I don’t want it to be ‘this is a mental-health movie’,” they continued.
Ramsey has previously opened up about their struggles with eating disorders. While filming the kids TV show, The Worst Witch, the child star developed anorexia that led to her leaving the show.
While shining a light on issues important to them, Ramsey doesn’t want the film to become too preachy, adding, “That’s the balancing act I’m working on. It’s a bit scary.”
“I think mental health can often be quite scary,” they said of the script. “It centres around this girl with an eating disorder, and it’s done in an interesting, slightly spooky way.”
Having previously starred in the stark, post-apocalyptic drama The Last Of Us and recently receiving praise for her feature in the prison drama Time, the actor is no stranger to dealing with tough subject matter.
With the second series of The Last Of Us set to be filmed soon, the actor is busy with other projects but hopes to get serious about their script soon. Hoping to even direct the film themselves, the project is “something I want to make in a few years, when I have time,” Ramsey says.
