Barry Keoghan reveals list of directors he wants to work with
Following his Academy Award nomination, two Golden Globe nods, and a BAFTA win, Irish actor Barry Keoghan is firmly in-demand but he’s also eyeing up several directors for future projects.
Keoghan’s upcoming roles include the long-delayed miniseries Masters of the Air, executively produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, as well as his presumed involvement in the sequel to The Batman after debuting as the Joker in the first instalment.
Looking ahead, the actor has his own list of names he’d love to work with. Yorgos Lanthimos, Christopher Nolan, Chloé Zhao, Matt Reeves, Martin McDonagh, Emerald Fennell, and Andrea Arnold are among the high-profile filmmakers to have cast Keoghan in their projects so far. Yet, if he gets his way, he’s planning to collaborate with plenty more of the biggest directorial talents the industry has at its disposal.
In a new profile with GQ, Keoghan reeled off a set of directors who he’d like to work with in the future. The Saltburn star told the publication: “Barry Jenkins. Paul Thomas Anderson. Christopher Nolan, again. Yorgos again, obviously. Lynne Ramsay. Chloé Zhao again. Martin McDonagh, obviously, again. Greta Gerwig, as well—I’d love to work with Greta. I think she’s fucking incredible.”
Having previously missed out on a part in Ready Player One, Keoghan also wants to get hired for a Spielberg production the next time the opportunity presents itself, reflecting on his audition in reverential tones: “I remember doing the screen test, and he had a little camcorder in his hand, and I was like, ‘This is insane.’ Steven Spielberg is filming me doing a scene, on a camcorder. ”
In his own words, Keoghan is embarking on a brand new stage of his career, claiming “it’s nice not just being looked at as the weird-looking guy,” referring to himself as “the unique fecking freaky little freak man-child, freak child-man, whatever you want to call it.”
As he succinctly put it: “And now I’m just Man. Freak-Man. Man-Freak.”
In a four-star review of Saltburn, which is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, Far Out wrote: “As cocaine-snorting, fashionable consumerists, they are the modern-day royalty that line painted on the walls of Saltburn. Keoghan’s Oliver is very much aware of this, too, and doggedly attempts to remain amongst the elite ala The Talented Mr. Ripley, playing a sneaky, unhinged maniac who has as much fun as possible whilst trying to dismantle the system.”
