Baftas 2024: The full list of winners

Celebrating the best of cinema on home soil and across the world, the 77th Bafta ceremony delivered in heaps. By far the biggest night of the year in the calendar of British cinema, the Baftas have long been used to flex the might of indie cinema on the island, and this year’s event was another bonanza.

Including key categories, such as ‘Outstanding British Film’ and ‘Best Outstanding Debut By A British Writer, Director Or Producer’, the Baftas champion home-grown talent, putting the likes of Poor Things, How to Have Sex and The Zone of Interest front and centre. Both Poor Things and The Zone of Interest have received much interest at the Academy Awards, too, both receiving nods for ‘Best Picture’.

Nolan’s grand biopic Oppenheimer, charting the rise of the grandfather of the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, led the line with 13 nominations, including ‘Best Film’, ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Leading Actor’ for Cillian Murphy. Elsewhere, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things had 11 nominations, and both Killers of the Flower Moon and The Zone of Interest followed up with nine apiece.

Anatomy of a Fall picked up the evening’s first award after it took home the gong for ‘Best Original Screenplay’. Studio Ghibli also enjoyed a momentous win, becoming the first Japanese production to take home the award for ‘Best Animated Film’.

The Zone of Interest made good on its pre-show buzz, picking up the awards for ‘Oustanding British Film’, ‘Best Sound’ and ‘Best Film Not In The English Language’.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph picked up her well-earned award for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ for her role in The Holdovers. There was a nautical theme when awarding ‘Best British Short Film’ and ‘Best British Animation’ with Jellyfish and Lobster and Crab Day winning, respectively.

Poor Things proved itself to be the most visually engaging film of the year, winning the awards for ‘Best Special Visual Effects’, ‘Best Costume Design’, ‘Best Makeup and Hair’and ‘Best Production Design’, before actor and producer Emma Stone grabbed the coveted prize of ‘Best Leading Actress’. However, there can be no doubt that the night belonged to Oppenheimer.

Oppenheimer got its first award of the evening when it grabbed the award for ‘Best Editing’, shortly followed by its second for ‘Best Cinematography’. The third win for the movie’s production came when Robert Dwoney Jr grabbed the gong for ‘Best Supporting Actor’. The fourth award of the evening came when it was awarded the prize for ‘Best Original Score’.

But its best moments came for the cast and crew later on in the evening as Christopher Nolan took the award for ‘Best Director’. Cillian Murphy became the first Irish actor to win ‘Best Actor’ at the Baftas before the movie made it a comparatively clean sweep and nabbed the ‘Best Film’ award.
