Baftas 2024: Emma Stone wins ‘Best Actress’
American actor Emma Stone has won the Bafta for ‘Best Actress’ for her role in Yorgos Lanthimos’ film Poor Things.
Stone was up against tough competition, beating names such as Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Margot Robbie (Barbie), and Carey Mulligan (Maestro).
Taking to the stage to collect her award, Stone thanked Bafta as well as her dialect coach Neil Swain, who helped her best capture her British accent in the film. “What you brought to life blows my mind,” she said in the direction of the crew, “I’m just in awe of all of you”.
Continuing, she added: “I really just want to thank my mum, she’s the best I know in the whole world and she inspires me everyday”.
Stone appeared alongside Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo, and Ramy Youssef in Lanthimos’ film. She was previously directed by the Greek filmmaker in The Favourite, which was released in 2018.
The movie follows Stone’s Bella Baxter, a woman who is brought back to life after a surgeon replaces her brain with that of her unborn baby, allowing her to experience life anew, as well as embarking on a journey of sexual discovery.
“In a four-star review of Poor Things, Far Out said, “The heart of it is Emma Stone, playing the pivotal Baxter, and it’s clear that the very fact this movie exists is almost entirely down to the fact that Yorgos and Stone have found in each other a genuinely like-minded collaborator.”
The review continues, “Their work together is fruitful and compelling – reminiscent of a director/actor duo from a more creatively free and classic time of Hollywood, like Shelley Duvall to Robert Altman.”
Stone joins a long list of esteemed recent Bafta winners, including Frances McDormand, Joanna Scanlan and Cate Blanchett.
