Aubrey Plaza reveals Justin Bieber’s involvement in ‘My Old Ass’

Directed by Megan Park and starring Aubrey Plaza, My Old Ass has become one of the biggest hits at the Sundance Film Festival, with the lead actor taking to the stage to discuss the making of the comedy.

Taking to the stage at the Eccles Theater in Park City, Plaza admitted that the project “All just made sense to me,” being attracted to the project through the title alone. A coming-of-age indie comedy, the story follows a young student who comes face to face with her future self while on a mushroom trip, forcing her to reconsider her future outlook on college and her general future.

Sparking a drug-fueled night, the film culminates in one scene where the protagonist is on stage to a crowd of mad teenage fans as Justin Bieber, performing ‘One Less Lonely Girl’.

The use of the song hinged massively on whether the Canadian pop star would allow them the licence, eventually giving in to the filmmaker. “Once he gave us the go-ahead, we were thrilled,” director Megan Park said, “We leaned into it even more. Everybody was so game to play and have fun”.

Speaking further about the movie in general on stage, Park added: “I kept thinking about this idea: there was a time when you did something like play pretend with your friends, and then you just never did it again…That made me really emotional. I also wanted to immerse myself in a joyful film and something that made people feel nostalgic for an easier, simpler time in life. Because life can be hard and shitty sometimes. I wanted to have an escape”.

Elsewhere at the festival, such anticipated movies as Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow and Rose Glass’ Love Lies Bleeding have already impressed indie cinema lovers.
