A$AP Rocky reflects on failed ‘Star Wars’ audition: “I was trash that day”

A$AP Rocky has revealed that he once auditioned to be in Star Wars, but admitted he didn’t get the role because he “was trash that day.”

The rapper spoke to Variety, the day after he co-chaired the Met Gala, and his partner Rihanna revealed the pair are expecting their third child. However, he also reflected on his turn to the big screen and how the role in the sci-fi franchise evaded him.

He explained that he auditioned for the part of Lando Calrissian in The Rise of Skywalker film in 2019, a role that eventually went to Donald Glover, and Billy Dee Williams played in the original movies.

Rocky reflected: “My audition was trash. I was trash that day. My man Childish Gambino [Donald Glover] was a way better Lando than I would’ve provided at that time. And I think he looked a little more like [Billy Dee Williams] than me.”

Despite this, when asked if he would still join the franchise if given the chance, the rapper responded, “Hell yeah!”

It comes as Rocky is set to make other strides into the film world in the coming months, playing the lead role in the hotly anticipated new Spike Lee movie Highest 2 Lowest in which he stars opposite Denzel Washington, and which will be premiered at the Cannes Film Festival later this month.

In the film, the musician-turned-actor plays Washington’s son Yung Felon. Regarding the pair’s on-screen chemistry, Lee said in a previous interview: “A$AP, man, he’s fire. I mean, there’s some scenes where him and D [Washington] head to head – he ain’t backing up. Like, ‘I’m here too.’”

Highest 2 Lowest will be released in the US on August 22nd, before arriving on Apple TV+ on September 5th.
