Watch Denzel Washington in teaser for new Spike Lee film ‘Highest 2 Lowest’
The first teaser trailer for the upcoming crime thriller film Highest 2 Lowest, starring Denzel Washington and directed by Spike Lee, has been released.
As the fifth movie collaboration between the actor and director, the film follows Washington as a gangster figure on the streets of New York, but currently little else is known as to the plot of the film.
Opposite Washington star Ilfenesh Hadera and Jeffrey Wright, as well as rappers Ice Spice and A$AP Rocky. The latter is understood to be playing the lead character of Washington’s son, Yung Felon.
Highest 2 Lowest is an adaptation of the 1963 Japanese film High and Low, directed by Akira Kurosawa, which follows the story of a cobbler who must face consequences after his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped and held to ransom.
The film, which is being produced by A24, will premiere out of competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival this month, before being released theatrically and on streaming later in the year.
With regard to the resemblance between Washington and A$AP Rocky, Lee said in previous interviews: “What’s funny is that I was looking at Instagram four or five years ago and people were saying that A$AP looked like he’s Denzel’s son. I saw those memes, and then in the film we used that.”
He then added: “A$AP, man, he’s fire. I mean, there’s some scenes where him and D [Washington] head to head – he ain’t backing up. Like, ‘I’m here too.’ So very, very happy with the way the film turned out and looking forward to sharing it with the world.”
Highest 2 Lowest will be released in US cinemas on August 22nd, 2025, before being made available to stream on Apple TV+ from September 5th.
