Which artist holds the record for the most consecutive ‘Album of the Year’ nominations?
There are a few honours and awards that have lost their credibility in the music industry over the years, but the Grammys aren’t one of them.
In fact, no matter what anybody says, the ceremony is one of the most respected and coveted across the industry, one that many artists constantly keep in the back of their minds whenever they’re working on new material. And while it’s hosted many scandalous moments over the years, it’s also provided a platform for artists to spotlight several important discussions, too.
For instance, in more recent years, many artists have called attention to issues like grassroots funding, health insurance, industry bias and prejudice, and other discourse about what artistic authenticity truly means in music. During last year’s ceremony, Chappell Roan joined this trend, demanding that “labels and the industry profiting millions of dollars off of artists would offer a livable wage and healthcare”.
As revered and significant as it may be, however, the ceremony has also come under fire in the past for unfair representation and a lack of equal opportunities in certain categories, with many of its biggest record holders appearing as dominant names in pop spaces. Taylor Swift, for instance, has received backlash more than once for her so-called snubs, with people wondering whether some of them should have gone to someone more deserving.
Most people know what it’s like to hold onto hope that one of their favourite artists will win in one of the categories, just as most people know what it’s like when they lose to someone else. In the industry, charts and awards aren’t the sole measure of success, but it does feel satisfying when someone you genuinely respect goes up on stage to accept an award they’ve truly earned.
Which artist has the most consecutive ‘Album of the Year’ noms?
From the artist’s perspective, there’s obviously a feeling of victory, too, when they win something, even if they don’t always show it, and when they don’t win something, there’s likely a deeper level of disappointment, too, because when it comes to the Grammys, most artists want to be record-holders for positive things, like Beyoncè, with her 35 Grammy wins, or Alison Krauss or Aretha Franklin, also for their significant collection of wins.
Most people only dream of being the artist to have the most wins in a single night, a crown worn by Michael Jackson after he won eight awards at the Grammys in 1984, or even simply winning ‘Album of the Year’ once is good enough for some, a notable milestone that tells them their art is worthwhile and more impactful than any other releases of that year.
However, many probably don’t want to be record-holders for the most consecutive nominations in the category with no wins, even though nominations are still good enough recognition as a standalone achievement. That crown is currently owned by Barbra Streisand, who was nominated for ‘Album of the Year’ across the period of 1964 to 1967.
That said, this doesn’t really mean anything, not when it comes to Streisand, and especially not since she’s also had her share of Grammy wins over a longer period of time. This includes ‘Album of the Year’, Song of the Year, and perhaps the best of all, one that trumps most other record-holders and makes her longer nominations run seem infinitesimal, is her Grammy Legend Award.
