Armie Hammer breaks silence on abuse and cannibal allegations
Call Me by Your Name actor Armie Hammer has addressed allegations of a cannibalism fetish he has faced since 2021 and said, ultimately, he’s “grateful” for the ordeal.
In 2021, the Golden Globe-nominated actor was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women and rape by another. This string of accusations included alleged cannibalistic fetishes. Initially, Hammer exacerbated the situation when claiming the allegations were part of an online attack and denied any criminal wrongdoing, despite later admitting to “one million per cent” emotionally abusing two female accusers.
Later, in a 2023 interview with Air Mail, Hammer conceded that his fascination with BDSM originated from being sexually abused as a teenager.
That year, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office also decided not to charge Hammer with sexual assault following the extensive investigation by the LAPD. While no charges have been pursued against the actor, his career has failed to recover.
During a new appearance on the Painful Lessons podcast, Hammer openly addressed the claims of cannibalism: “People called me a cannibal, and everyone believed them. They’re like, ‘Yep, that guy ate people’.”
“Like, what? What are you talking about? Do you know what you have to do to be a cannibal? You have to eat people! How am I going to be a cannibal?! It was bizarre.” The actor also maintained that there were “discrepancies in whatever it was that people said” and that he is “now at a place in my life where I’m grateful for every single bit of it”.
Hammer said that before the allegations came to light, he never knew how to give himself love, as his job allowed him to receive it from the outside world. Back then, he never had “enough”, felt satisfied or was happy with himself.
Accordingly, he is now thankful for this shift in fortunes. He explained: “I’m actually now at a place where I’m really grateful for it because, where I was in my life before all of that stuff happened to me, I didn’t feel good.”
Continuing to reflect on his “ego death” and “career death”, the actor revealed he joined a 12-step programme after the allegations broke. “It’s almost like a neutron bomb went off in my life,” he said. “It killed me, it killed my ego, it killed all the people around me that I thought were my friends that weren’t – all of those people, in a flash, went away.”
“I’m still here,” Hammer concluded. He still has his health and is “really grateful for that”. While he claims he is no longer a “viable commodity” for Hollywood, he also revealed he is writing a script with a friend and has no acting projects lined up.
