Apple TV+ to stream new Lily Gladstone movie ‘Fancy Dance’
Apple Original Films has secured the worldwide distribution rights for Fancy Dance, a drama that premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Starring Lily Gladstone, Fancy Dance is set to hit cinemas and arrive on Apple TV+ later this year.
The movie serves as the feature directorial debut for Erica Tremblay, who also contributed as a co-writer and producer. The news follows Gladstone’s Oscar nomination for her role as Mollie Burkhart in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, another Apple original.
“Our film Fancy Dance has found the perfect home with Apple, and I am thrilled to share this beautiful story of two Seneca-Cayuga women with a global audience,” Tremblay said in a new statement.
“As a Native American filmmaker, seeing my community included in the rich tapestry of cinema is a dream come true,” they added.
The screenplay, helmed by Tremblay and Miciana Alise, revolves around Gladstone’s character Jax, who resides on the Seneca-Cayuga Reservation in Oklahoma. Jax takes care of her niece Roki, portrayed by Isabel Deroy-Olson after her sister mysteriously disappears. Together, they embark on a journey to find Roki’s missing mother, uncovering profound truths about the plight of Indigenous women in a colonised society. The cast also features Ryan Begay, Shea Whigham, Crystle Lightning, and Audrey Wasilewski.
The financial details of the agreement, brokered by WME Independent on behalf of the filmmakers, have not yet been disclosed. In February 2023, Dubai-based sales agency Cercamon acquired international sales rights to the movie following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
Fancy Dance, a Confluential Films and Significant Productions/AUM Group collaboration, is produced by Erica Tremblay, Deidre Backs, Heather Rae, Nina Yang Bongiovi, and Tommy Oliver. Lily Gladstone, Bird Runningwater, Charlotte Koh, and Forest Whitaker also serve as executive producers.
