Oscars 2024: Lily Gladstone makes history as the first Native American to be nominated for ‘Best Actress’

Actor Lily Gladstone has made history as the first Native American to be nominated for the ‘Best Actress’ award at the Oscars for her performance in Martin Scorsese’s historical crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon.

Gladstone, who was raised on the Blackfeet Reservation in Browning, Montana, and is of Piegan Blackfeet and Nez Perce heritage, gave a show-stealing performance in Scorsese’s movie, leading to widespread acclaim.

The actor made her film debut in Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian before going on to work with Kelly Reichardt in Certain Women and First Cow, but it’s Killers of the Flower Moon for which she is now best known.

Having already become the first Indigenous person to win the Golden Globe for ‘Best Actress’, Gladstone has doubled down on her success. In Scorsese’s film, she plays an Osage native who marries Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, and he has his uncle (played by Robert De Niro) aim to swindle them out of their oil-rich fortunes.

Gladstone is facing fierce competition this year at the Oscars, being pitted against Annette Bening for her performance in Nyad, Sandra Huller for Anatomy of a Fall, Carey Mulligan for Maestro and Emma Stone for her effort in Poor Things.

In a four-and-a-half star review of Killers of the Flower Moon, Far Out wrote, “As expected of Scorsese, every shot is perfectly crafted and brings the nature of the true-crime narrative to new cinematic heights.”

The review continued, “At three and a half hours long, Killers of the Flower Moon is utterly captivating, sensitive in its approach and an essential work in chronicling the power that the United States would eventually become.”
