Apple TV+ announce new Martin Scorsese documentary
Apple TV+ have announced a new Martin Scorsese documentary that will feature a host of A-list celebrities with whom the filmmaker has previously worked.
Titled Mr. Scorsese, the five-part series portrait will be directed by esteemed filmmaker Rebecca Miller, known for She Came To Me and Personal Velocity. For now, the release date is ambiguous: “coming soon.”
It promises viewers will be afforded “unrestricted access” to his private archives and “never-before-seen interviews with friends, family, and creative collaborators”. Through personal interviews and chats, the documentary will shed light on Scorsese’s life, legend, and career.
It will span Scorsese’s first student films, which he made while attending New York University, to his most recent release, the 2023’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Far Out gave this movie 4.5 stars, stating: “As expected of Scorsese, every shot is perfectly crafted and brings the nature of the true-crime narrative to new cinematic heights. At three and a half hours long, Killers of the Flower Moon is utterly captivating, sensitive in its approach and an essential work in chronicling the power that the United States would eventually become.”
There are plenty of long-time collaborators onboard, such as Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Steven Spielberg, Margot Robbie, Mick Jagger, Robbie Robertson, Cate Blanchett, Jodie Foster, Daniel Day-Lewis and more.
It was not always intended to be a five-part documentary. The project has been in the works for years, expanding from a single segment to the five-parter that will eventually be released. Miller commented on this via a press release: “His work and life are so vast and so compelling that the piece evolved from one to five parts over a five-year period; crafting this documentary alongside my longtime collaborators has been one of the defining experiences of my life as a filmmaker.”
Scorsese’s next project will feature Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt and Leonardo DiCaprio. The movie is set to combine elements of other Scorsese masterpieces such as Goodfellas and The Departed, only this time through the lens of an organised crime boss in Hawaii.
