Anna Kendrick set to direct tumultuous ‘The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’ adaptation for Netflix
Anna Kendrick is set to direct the Netflix adaptation of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, in a move that is hoped to pull the production out of chaos.
Initial plans for a film adaptation of the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid were announced back in 2022, but despite much excitement and social media discussion on how the movie was progressing, no further updates have materialised.
The film is now seemingly on to its third director, with Maggie Betts and Leslye Headland having been previously attached to helm the project, but departing for reasons that are not publicly known.
Subsequently, Variety now reports that Kendrick has been hired as the new director, although with no further details revealed about what this means for the timeline of the film’s release.
It is also not known what specific stage of the production that Netflix is currently at, although it was indicated that the script is undergoing revisions following a first draft being written.
Moreover, no suggestions regarding potential casting have yet been made, despite many fans of the novel initially vying for Jessica Chastain to take on one of the lead roles of Celia St James, after the initial news was announced four years ago.
However, Chastain herself doused these rumours the following year, telling E! News in 2023 that there was “zero possibility” of her being attached to the project.
For her own part, if actor Kendrick sees the directorial duties through on The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, it would mark her second time taking on the main job behind the camera, following her debut with the film Woman of the Hour in 2023.
The eventual movie will be based on the 2017 novel by Reid, which was originally set to be adapted into a TV series, before plans were cancelled in 2021 and Netflix picked up the film rights the next year.
