Angelina Jolie no longer recognises the United States: “These are very, very heavy times”

At the San Sebastian Film Festival, Angelina Jolie stated that she no longer recognises the United States in 2025.

Jolie was in the Basque Country for the European premiere of Alice Winocour’s new movie Couture, which she stars in, when she fielded questions about the political landscape in America following the assassination of Charlie Kirk and the subsequent suspension of Jimmy Kimmel by ABC.

When posed a question about freedom of speech in the United States, Jolie replied, “I love my country, but I don’t at this time recognise my country.”

Elaborating on her stance, Jolie explained, “I’ve always lived internationally, my family is international, my friends, my life… My worldview is equal, united, and international. Anything anywhere that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms from anyone, I think, is very dangerous.”

She added, “These are such serious times that we have to be careful not to say things casually. These are very, very heavy times we are living in together.”

Earlier this year, at Cannes, Jolie, who has been a vocal critic of Donald Trump’s administration during both of his terms, said of the USAID cuts: “I will be saying much more and I will be traveling through the regions myself. But uh it’s, it’s just so serious. It’s just not, you know — obviously it makes me it, it makes me very angry and very sick.”

In San Sebastian, Jolie also discussed her upcoming film, Couture, in which her character’s life is turned upside down by a cancer diagnosis. “I lost my mother and grandmother very young, so I chose to have a double mastectomy about a decade ago,” she said of her personal relation to cancer.

The Hollywood star continued, “Those were my choices. I don’t say everybody should do it that way, but it’s important to have the choice. I don’t regret it. Anybody who’s gone through something feels vulnerable and alone. There is something particular about women’s cancers because (they) affect how we feel as women.”
