Amanda Seyfried claims Joni Mitchell cover “made more of an impact” than Emmy win
Amanda Seyfried has said her viral Joni Mitchell cover was more impactful on her career than winning an Emmy in 2022.
In March, Seyfried impressed viewers of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon when she played the dulcimer to cover the classic Mitchell track, ‘California’. The incredible moment went stratospherically viral, being viewed almost 40 million times on TikTok alone.
When she returned to The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon earlier this month to discuss her new movie, The Housemaid, the late-night host told Seyfried, “It was one of the most viral videos that ever came out of our show in the history of the show.”
She then labelled the reaction to the cover, which included praise from Mitchell on Instagram, as “surreal”.
Now, during a new interview with Who What Wear, Seyfried has once again reflected on ‘California’, sharing, “I got work from that.”
Remarkably, the actor also then said that she believed the cover of ‘California’ was more beneficial for her than winning an Emmy for her performance as Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout, adding, “I feel like that made more of an impact than my Emmy did.”
Another consequence of the viral clip was speculation that she was set to play the legendary singer-songwriter in an upcoming biopic, which Seyfried distanced herself from earlier this year.
The biopic is being helmed by Cameron Crowe. While casting has yet to be officially confirmed, it was reported in August that Anya Taylor-Joy is set to play a younger version of Mitchell in the movie, and Meryl Streep will play an older version of the legendary singer-songwriter.
Seyfried previously said her Fallon appearance “was not an audition” and maintained “what I know about that project is that I’m very, very much aged-out of young Joni”.
