Anya Taylor-Joy and Meryl Streep rumoured to be lined up for Joni Mitchell biopic
Anya Taylor-Joy and Meryl Streep are reportedly being lined up to star in a biopic about Joni Mitchell, directed by Cameron Crowe.
The two Hollywood stars are being rumoured to play the younger and older versions of the iconic folk star, respectively, in a biopic slated to tell the story of her illustrious life and career.
Very little else is known about the potential film at this early stage, but if it were to come to fruition, it would mark Crowe’s first feature-length directorial effort since Aloha back in 2015, which starred Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams, Bill Murray, and John Krasinski in a rom-com about a former US Air Force pilot who returns to Hawaii to oversee the launch of a private weapons satellite.
However, it is clear that Crowe has had an affinity to Mitchell’s orbit for some time, as he also produced a documentary called David Crosby: Remember My Name. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019, it followed the life and times of the folk rock star, who was famously also one of Mitchell’s closest confidants.
Speculation that a biopic centring on Mitchell’s life could be coming had been swirling for some time, especially since actor Amanda Seyfried appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon earlier this year and performed a cover of the star’s prolific hit ‘California’ on the dulcimer.
This prompted rumours that she could have been lined up to take on the role, but if the current speculation is to be believed, it seems that Taylor-Joy and Streep have both bagged the part.
No further details on the casting or release of the film have been officially announced, although it is understood that filming was due to begin in March this year, but was delayed due to Crowe’s home being affected in the LA wildfires.
