Adrianne Lenker shares new single ‘Ruined’

Adrianne Lenker, the songwriter best known for her work in Big Thief, has shared her new track ‘Ruined’. The song sees Lenker return to her solo project with a stripped-back piano ballad.

An incredibly prolific writer, Lenker has recently released the tracks ‘Born For Loving You’ and the hugely popular ‘Vampire Empire’ with her band Big Thief. Never content to stick to one project or slow her creativity, ‘Ruined’ is the intro to the long-awaited follow-up to her 2020 solo albums Songs and Instrumentals, as she announces her new LP will arrive in 2024.

As her solo tracks such as ‘Anything’ and ‘Not A Lot, Just Forever’ seem to become increasingly beloved with each passing year, ‘Ruined’ provides the same heavily emotional, cathartic experience. Performed on piano for the first time as something different for the musician, the track is sparse and totally devastating.

Lenker’s sharp lyrical pen is especially pointed in this begging track, dealing with heartbreak and love. Talking about the song, Lenker said, “This song has been a quiet beacon for me. It may contain the essence of the gift of romantic love, but it’s mostly about something much bigger.”

The new song, ‘Ruined’, is accompanied by a beautiful music video shot by Lenker’s brother, Noah Lenker. Perfectly suiting the broken-down sound of the song, from the instrumental to the lyrics, the video imposes Lenker’s image onto haunting natural shots. As striking as the song itself, the Lenker siblings have created a perfect collaboration.

Additionally, she has announced details of a European tour for 2024. Lenker will perform in Ireland, the UK, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway in April and May. For the run of dates, she’ll be supported by Nick Hakim, Twain and Ellie O’Neill on the acoustic tour de force.

Lenker also recently revealed plans for a string of songwriting workshops where students can learn skills directly from her. Teaching about guitar tunings, lyric writing and how to combine the universal and the personal in writing, Lenker’s classes are running on Zoom throughout January.
