Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker announces online songwriting course
Want to learn songwriting from one of the best of our time? Well, thankfully, Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker has announced her own songwriting workshops.
In addition to being a singer and songwriter with Big Thief, Lenker has also gained a cult following for her solo efforts. Tracks like ‘Anything’ and ‘Not A Lot, Just Forever’ comfortably sit as some of the best-written love songs of recent years. Now, Lenker will be allowing fans into her process and hosting online songwriting workshops in 2024.
Lenker will be doing the songwriting lectures through the School Of Song, an online education platform that regularly brings in big names to share their skills and advice. On January 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th, Lenker will hold the classes over Zoom, which lets international fans be involved in the discussion.
At a price of $160, the course involves lectures, workshops, Q&A sessions and the opportunity for students to share their songs with Lenker. According to the course notes, she’ll teach about open tunings, guitar techniques, and lyrical content that balances “the specific with the universal”, highlighting the “beauty and magic”.
The course description says students will “begin with the understanding that songs emerge from an ever-mysterious source within us—our subconscious, our inner child, magic, the universe.”
It continues: “Our primary task as songwriters is to ensure this source remains unblocked and unhindered. This workshop will cover how Adrianne navigates this unblocking process throughout all facets of life to get back to the place where songs come from.”
In a five-star review of Big Thief’s 2022 album Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You, Far Out wrote: “Big Thief have managed to pull off an album that feels both organic and evolutionary. It’s a record that allows for creativity to grow and procreate among the liner notes while also staying true to the soil it was first planted in.”
