One of 2021s most highly anticipated releases, Leos Carax’s Annette, is gaining considerable momentum ahead of its cinematic debut at the 74th Cannes Film Festival.
A duet between lead actors Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard has been released from the soundtrack of the upcoming musical, written by Sparks pair Ron and Russell Mael, who also helped to pen the film’s screenplay with Carax. The song ‘We Love Each Other So Much’, joins the film’s lead single ‘So May We Start’ released earlier this year which also featured the lead vocals of Driver and Cotillard.
Previously helming the critically acclaimed 2012 film Holy Motors, starring Kylie Minogue, this is Carax’s first English-language film and is set to follow the fantastical story of a stand-up comedian and an opera singer who raise a two-year-old daughter with a surprising gift.
Speaking of the film’s soundtrack the Mael brothers stated, “Initially, we conceived Annette as another Sparks album. Yet this time it would be a narrative story that would consist of three main characters, a small enough ensemble that would allow us to also present the ‘opera’ live on tour”.
According to the brothers, they both met Carax at Cannes and shared with him the album they had been working on, “Lo and behold, he said he really liked the album and would like to consider it as his next project. We were happily surprised and elated at his reaction. As fans of Leos’ films, to now realise that he would be directing a film of ours was beyond our dreams”.
It’s a big year for Sparks, who have also collaborated with Edgar Wright for a documentary about their career titled The Sparks Brothers due for release later this summer.
Annette is set to open the 74th annual Cannes Film Festival on July 6 before hitting cinemas on August 6th and Amazon Prime Video on August 20th.
