The one acting fear Michael Caine failed to conquer: “I’ve never been able to do it”

Some scenes are difficult to watch, not because of their content but because we can only imagine the awkwardness of filming them. Graphic sex scenes or moments requiring full-frontal nudity often leave us empathising with the actors, who are left completely exposed and vulnerable.

In recent years, the introduction of intimacy coordinators and stricter on-set guidelines has helped protect actors’ wellbeing and safety during these challenging moments. However, in the past, such safeguards were virtually nonexistent, leaving actors to navigate complex power dynamics and intimate scenes in front of an entire crew without adequate support. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Michael Caine has consistently steered clear of such scenes throughout his career, opting to remain comfortably within the confines of his wardrobe.

Whether it be his breakout role in The Icpress File and Alfie or his later work in The Italian Job and Sleuth, Caine has played a vast number of characters that vary from smooth to sleazy, somehow managing to infuse his wry charm in every film, regardless of who he is playing. But given his reputation on and off-screen for being a ‘womaniser’, he has never been involved in a scene in which he is nude, which is something he has intentionally avoided throughout his career.

When asked about performing love scenes and the expectation of being nude, Caine said, “You can’t win, because if you do it for real, if you’re really a good actor, you really look as though you love the woman, you know? And it’s very difficult for someone else who loves you to watch that, so I don’t like doing them. And also love scenes often obviously involve a lot of kissing and cuddling and sometimes nudity and all that, and I hate it all. It sort of gets in the way of everything”.

It’s an interesting double standard because there have been many female actors who have later spoken about uncomfortable experiences on set in which they were forced to be nude, often with entirely male crews watching and no women on set to share this experience with.

Caine described the former practices around on-set nudity, saying, “All the big stars in the old days, they never did any of these scruffy love scenes and rolling about. And if the girl has to take their clothes off, then there’s nervous breakdowns and things going on, and it’s not worth it. I couldn’t do a nude scene. I’ve never been able to do it. I mean, I’ve looked as though I was nude, but I never take my shorts off. I always keep my shorts on.”.

While Caine is able to keep his shorts on, there were many actors in the past who were not given this luxury and, regardless of their comfort levels, were told they had to be completely naked. As the actor describes, this can cause extreme stress and anxiety, something that film productions are thankfully more aware of, with nudity clauses being added to contracts and the intimacy coordinators whose sole job is to protect the safety and comfort of the actor.

Given the lack of consideration around this in the past, it’s not surprising that Caine was afraid of these scenes, and I’m sure he is very thankful that he’s had the option to ‘keep his shorts on’.
