Watch Aaron Taylor-Johnson star in first trailer for Robert Eggers’ ‘Werwulf’
Director Robert Eggers has shared the first glimpse at his upcoming movie, Werwulf.
The horror film set in 13th-century England, starring Robert Taylor-Johnson, Lily Rose Depp and Willem Dafoe, is scheduled for a cinematic release in the UK on January 1st, 2027 and Christmas Day in the US.
It is described as being “Robert Eggers’ most visceral and haunting experience yet” as well as “a harrowing tale of devotion, damnation and the devil within.”
In the trailer, viewers see Taylor-Johnson transformed into the titular Werwulf, as well as an innocent child, while a spooky voiceover reads, “Do not dread darkness, embrace it.”
Meanwhile, Depp’s character begs, “Keep my husband safe from his cursedness.”
Notably, Taylor-Johnson and Depp are no strangers to working with Eggers, having previously teamed up with the director on Nosferatu, which scooped four nominations at the Academy Awards.
Speaking to Empire, Eggers said of the film, “It’s set around 1300, and if you were living in England in 1300, every single part of every of everyday life was through a Catholic lens. That was just how it was. So if we’re setting it in that period, that becomes a baseline for every character and every way of thinking.”
He also teased fans by remarking, “This is a slow-burn horror that’s about the tension and the anticipation and the mystery and the darkness, and… we don’t want to give it away. But… this film is immersive, and needs to be experienced full-immersion, on the big screen.”
Eggers added, “If you’re not smelling all the shit and mud in the street, then you’re not experiencing this movie properly.”
