10 movies for fans of ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’
Few love stories have enraptured audiences to such a personal degree as Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a melancholy romance about how pain is worth the trial of passion. Starring Jim Carrey in one of his first and most prominent forays into drama, the film includes a spectacular ensemble that also includes Kate Winslet, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo and Kirsten Dunst.

An ode to the joy of spontaneity, the film sees Ethan Hawke’s Jessie and Julie Delpy’s Céline develop a fondness for each other during one fateful evening while travelling in Vienna. A beautiful love story about the fleeting nature of summer romance, Linklater’s entire Before trilogy feels cut from the same cloth as Eternal Sunshine, and the same can be said for the recent ‘Best Picture’ nominee Past Lives. Also dealing with lost loves and newfound pleasures, Celine Song’s film delves deeper into how one’s identity changes with time, subconsciously requiring new kinds of connections and relationships.
The latter shares many similarities to Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s criminally unsung romance Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, the winner of the Jury Grand Prix at the Berlin Film Festival back in 2021. Split into three short stories, Hamaguchi’s film is shrouded in a veil of unexpected love, regretful decisions and fateful moments that shape each one of their lives, making it quite the companion piece to Eternal Sunshine.
But, if you come to Gondry’s film and fall in love with the two central lost souls, Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation would surely also dazzle, following a young woman and washed-up actor who form an unlikely bond in Tokyo. Bill Murray’s Bob Harris and Scarlett Johansson’s Charlotte represent two of cinema’s most adored lost souls, and while they cannot truly compare to the chemistry between the two male leads in Andrew Haigh’s indie hit, Weekend, the two films share some similarities. A film about love being a safe place of belonging, Weekend is a tale of fleeting romance between men during a night out in Nottingham, UK, with their love providing just a mere glimpse into ‘what could’ve been’ for the pair.
Fantasy films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
A love story, first and foremost, Eternal Sunshine also dabbles in sci-fi and fantasy, with this aspect making the story so colourful and narratively absorbing. It’s not all that dissimilar from what Spike Jonze managed to achieve with his 2013 ‘Best Picture’ nominee Her, which told the story of a man’s unlikely romance with his AI operating system, sparking a romance that could truly never fulfil either of them.
While Eternal Sunshine is dipped in pure melancholy and sprinkled with moments of pure sorrow, Mark Romanek’s 2010 film Never Let Me Go revels in sadness but is also inextricably linked to the concept of the deeply mortal need to be loved. Adapted from the book of the same name by Kazuo Ishiguro, Alex Garland’s script describes a reality where three young friends frolic in freedom of their young lives, only to discover a dark fate about their existence.
It’s an emotionally brutal, existential journey about love, loss and life, just like David Lowery’s 2017 fantasy A Ghost Story, which seemed to pass by everyone’s attention upon its release. A beautiful tale, A Ghost Story, tells the story of a man who dies in a car accident and returns to his wife as a ghost to help her move on before he, himself, goes on a journey that transcends love and identity.
But, as fantasy flicks go, Eternal Sunshine is also far more frenetic than Ghost Story, with similar shades of colour being seen in the recent Oscar-winner Everything, Everywhere All At Once, another film that explores the concept of love transcending time and space. A wild sci-fi tale that picks apart nihilism and the extraordinary nature of being human, there’s no doubt that directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert didn’t also look toward Jaco Van Dormael’s 2009 film Mr. Nobody as an inspiration.
A phantasmagorical fantasy, Mr. Nobody is about the infinite paths that we choose to take and ignore through life, with each one providing a wildly different outcome on the conclusion of our own lives. A joyous film with a beautiful soundtrack, Dormael’s film speaks from the same hymn sheet as Eternal Sunshine, being a melancholy wonder that simply makes you smile at the knowledge of your own existence.
