The 10 actors who died on-screen the most

For many actors, their profession allows them to embody characters who are incredibly far removed from themselves. However, there often comes a time in their career when they must come face to face with the unavoidable thing that unites all of us, an inevitable event that causes many people to suffer deep anxiety – death.

Death has been depicted on our screens countless times, with actors often having to pretend to die in shocking or emotionally devastating ways. It can’t be easy to have to try and emulate a person’s dying moments, whether that be at the hands of a brutal killer or perhaps in a hospital bed, slowly dying from an illness. Whatever the cause of a character’s death, it is surely a difficult feat to get into the right mindset to embody the end of a life, bringing the actor head-on with their own mortality.

Some actors, such as Ben Stiller, have never died on screen. Then there’s the list of performers who have passed away on film tens of times, making you wonder why they are so willing to play parts that end with their tragic demise.

The record for the most on-screen deaths goes to Christopher Lee, who has died a whopping 70 times. He rose to prominence as a star of many Hammer Horror films in the 1950s, best known for playing Dracula and a range of other classic horror villains. In the later years of his career, the actor died in movies such as Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Coming in at joint second place with 48 deaths is Dennis Hopper, who has died in a variety of films, including several that he directed himself, like Easy Rider and Out of the Blue. He was also killed in Blue Velvet – a role that revitalised his career – and True Romance, alongside many, many more.

Also boasting 48 deaths is Vincent Price, an actor who starred in lots of horror movies between the ‘40s and ‘80s. While most of his deaths took place in horror movies, he is perhaps best recognised for playing The Inventor in Tim Burton’s gothic fantasy Edward Scissorhands, who dies of a heart attack.

John Hurt, of course, makes the list. The actor died so often that it was surprising when he finished a movie unscathed – perishing on screen 43 times. His first major death happened to be the chest-bursting incident in Ridley Scott’s iconic sci-fi movie Alien, which was followed by deaths in films like Hellboy, The Elephant Man, V For Vendetta and Only Lovers Left Alive.
