‘Zootopia 2’ becomes the highest-grossing animated Hollywood movie of all-time
Disney’s Zootopia 2 has become the highest-grossing animated Hollywood movie of all time.
The record previously belonged to Inside Out 2, but now Zootopia 2, which arrived in cinemas globally on November 28th, 2025, has amassed $1.7 billion at the global box office and taken the top spot. It is also now the ninth highest-grossing movie of all time.
Alan Bergman, co-chairman at Disney Entertainment, said of the achievement, “This milestone belongs first and foremost to the fans around the world whose enthusiasm made it possible.”
Bergman continued, “We’re incredibly proud of our filmmakers Jared Bush, Byron Howard, and Yvett Merino and the entire team at Walt Disney Animation Studios for creating a film that connects so deeply with audiences everywhere. Zootopia 2 is an extraordinary achievement, and we’re grateful to everyone who helped bring it to life.”
A key reason for the success of Zootopia 2 thriving at the box office is down to its success in the Chinese market, which has become less lucrative for Hollywood productions in recent years.
China is responsible for $619 million of Zootopia 2‘s $1.7 billion at the box office, which equates to 37 per cent. In comparison, the film has only taken $390 million domestically in the United States.
Zootopia 2‘s success in China shows how important the market remains for Hollywood, even though China’s National Film Administration announced a plan to “moderately reduce the number of American films imported” in April 2025 in response to President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
In recent years, even before China formally announced plans to curb its reliance on Hollywood, homegrown films had become dominant at the domestic box office.
As much as Zootopia 2 is the highest-grossing Hollywood animation of all time, China’s Ne Zha 2 remains the highest-grossing animation of all time after making more than $2.2 billion at the box office following its release in 2025, the majority of which was made in China.
