Chinese box-office sensation ‘Ne Zha 2’ to receive European release

The massive Chinese blockbuster movie Ne Zha 2 is set for theatrical release across the UK and Europe, after taking Asia and North America by storm as the highest-grossing animation of all time.

The distributor Trinity CineAsia has acquired the rights for the film from its production house, Beijing Enlight Media. In the coming months, the film will be released in 37 European countries, with the UK and Ireland first on the list.

The Chinese animation is hotly anticipated on European shores due to its seismic success elsewhere in the world, namely in its homeland where it has grossed a whopping $2.06 billion following its release over Chinese New Year.

Beating out the likes of Disney Pixar’s Inside Out 2 to the title of the biggest animation in the world, Ne Zha 2 also grossed a healthy $18.8 million – a sizeable achievement for Chinese films breaking into the Western movie market.

This sequel, as a follow-up to the original Ne Zha released in 2019 – also a runaway Chinese success at the time – is based on Chinese mythology and 16th-century literature, where an unlikely hero must battle demons both physically and within himself to save his home village.

The second instalment will see the character Ne Zha once again fighting this same fate, against overlords ruling from the heavens above.

Hailed as a “landmark” achievement by its distributors Trinity CineAsia, they say the release of Ne Zha 2 in Europe will mark a new era in opening Chinese film up to the rest of the world.

Ne Zha 2 is set for release in the UK and Ireland on March 21st, with previews beginning from March 14th.
