Youth Lagoon shares new single ‘Football’

The California-based singer-songwriter Trevor Powers has released a new single titled ‘Football’ under his Youth Lagoon guise.

The laid-back indie triumph was produced by Rodaidh McDonald and will soon be available on shelves as a “7 vinyl copy. The new track is also accompanied by a monochrome music video directed by Caleb Halter, which harkens back to televised football games of the past.

“And you told me I was stayin’ strong when all I’ve done is play along, And they put it on, they put it on me, Don’t put it on me,” the reflective lyrics read. They continue, “Maybe you’re not the person who caught the football.”

“‘Football’ is really a celebration of failure. Society has a terrible habit of only recognizing achievement while glossing over the greatness in the shadows,” Powers said of the new track in a press statement.

Adding: “We’re so distracted trying to earn love, worth and value that we forget it’s something we inherently already have. I wanted to play with this idea through the lens of sports ‘cuz, in a lot of ways, sports are the truest religion.”

Powers returned to his Youth Lagoon project in 2023, following an eight-year hiatus, with the acclaimed studio album Heaven Is a Junkyard.

Strengthening the endorsement of ubiquitous praise among fans, Chicago indie band Ratboys picked out Youth Lagoon’s Heaven Is a Junkyard as their favourite album of 2023 in an interview with Far Out in November.
