After the huge success of their debut LP DEAD – which scooped the prestigious award ahead of the likes of Damon Albarn, Kate Tempest, Bombay Bicycle Club and personal favourite East India Youth – ‘Soon Come Soon’ is the trio’s first new single release.
The track follows DEAD‘s approach of matching rallying and thought provoking lyrics with a backing that sounds as if its roots are firmly planted in modern electronica, meandering its way through a sporadic and at times disorientating journey – as opposed to the more linear production that seems to have become the staple of safer hip-hop.
It’s highly unlikely it’s going to storm to the top of the charts ahead of whatever tripe is shifting the most units right now (check for yourself, it’s Saturday and we can’t be fucked), but there is an undeniable pop element to ‘Soon Come Soon’ that will implant its catchy chorus firmly in your brain.
It all sets things up very nicely and has got us buzzing with anticipation for what the Edinburgh band have got in store in the coming weeks and months.
They didn’t seem to fussed when they won the scoop last month, but – as we found out last February – it is on the live stage where they really awaken. Check out our review from Manchester’s Deaf Institute, where they tore the place up shortly after DEAD‘s release.
Inevitably, there are probably a good few of you out there already itching for more. But for now, ‘Soon Come Soon’ is brand new gem for you to sink your teeth into that gets better with every listen.
