XXXTentacion smashes Spotify streaming record

XXXTentacion has set a new Spotify streaming record with his track ‘SAD!’.

The rapper, who died earlier this week at the age of 20 after being shot, has edged past Taylor Swift’s record for most single-day streams following his death. ‘SAD!’ 10.4 million streams globally, according to Spotify Charts, a figure that eclipses Swift’s song ‘Look What You Made Me Do’, which hit 10.1 million when it was released on August 25th, 2017.

‘SAD!’ has emerged as one of XXXTentacion’s most popular songs, not only for its catchy melody but also for its candid exploration of mental health issues—a topic that, at the time, was beginning to gain more visibility in the music industry. The song’s commercial success has now been amplified by the tragic circumstances of XXXTentacion’s life; he was murdered just three months after the release of his record, which cast a shadow over the song’s already sombre tone.

The 20-year-old rapper, real name Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, died in hospital from multiple shot wounds at the start of the week. XXXTentacion, who was out shopping shopping before his death, was shot by two men in a dark-coloured SUV as he left the dealership shop in Fort Lauderdale.

On the day of his death, XXXTentacion was at RIVA Motorsports, a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach. He was known for his love of cars and motorcycles, and this visit was a routine outing for the young rapper. As he was leaving the dealership in his BMW i8, two armed men approached his vehicle and shot him multiple times in what authorities later described as a targeted robbery. The attackers fled the scene with a Louis Vuitton bag containing $50,000 in cash that XXXTentacion had just withdrawn from the bank, presumably to make a purchase.

The attack happened in broad daylight, and despite efforts to save him, XXXTentacion was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to Broward Health North Hospital. The news of his death spread rapidly, and fans gathered outside the dealership in mourning.

In the wake of his death, ‘SAD!’ has taken on an even more poignant significance. The song’s themes of pain and loss and its introspective lyrics made it a posthumous tribute to the artist’s troubled life.

XXXTentacion’s manager Soloman Sobande has released an official statement following the death, it read:“On June 18, 2018, Jahseh Onfroy—known worldwide as XXXTentacion—tragically passed away from a gunshot wound in Deerfield, Florida,” the statement begins.

“In deference of his family , friends and loved ones and in light of further investigation, we ask that their privacy is respected at this time,” he added.

“XXXTentacion touched the lives of millions around the globe and will forever reside in the hearts of countless fans who listened to his music, attended his concerts, and felt the glow of his uncontainable, undeniable, and unique spirit.”
