Deciphering the worst Marvel villain of all time: “I was a paid whore”

Even after a decade since its release, it’s still arguable that Thor: The Dark World is the worst Marvel Cinematic Universe film to date. It’s no secret that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has suffered a catastrophic drop in quality ever since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which would’ve been a perfect place to either stop or take a long break. Following the historically awful box office performance of The Marvels, it’s arguable that the MCU is in a worse place right now than it has ever been.

Still, despite the very best efforts of films like Black Widow, Eternals, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and most recently, The Marvels, it is Thor: The Dark World that still stands as the nadir of the MCU’s filmography.

Each of those aforementioned movies was either mediocre instead of outright terrible or had something genuinely strong in them, even if the overall product faltered. For example, Eternals had some interesting ideas, Multiverse of Madness and Love and Thunder were both visually stunning, and Quantumania featured a strong villainous turn from Jonathan Majors. As for the other flat-out terrible movie from the MCU’s early days, Iron Man 2, at least that film was trying to do something, even if it was poorly executed.

On the other hand, Thor: The Dark World never seems to be trying to do anything. With its ultra-low-effort plot, empty action and resolute lack of substance, this is the kind of empty, effortless movie that feels like it was written and directed by an algorithm.

However, one of the very worst things about the film is its lead villain, Malekith the Dark Elf. An extremely bland, unthreatening character with next to no presence on-screen, Malekith arguably ranks among the dullest and least interesting movie villains of the 21st century, and at the time, he was easily the worst villain in a franchise that struggled to create compelling antagonists in its earlier films.

Even now, a decade removed from the movie’s release, there’s still a very strong argument to be made that Malekith remains the all-time worst MCU villain, and one person who would probably agree is the man who played him, Christoph Eccleston.

Eccleston has been very blunt about how much he hated working on the superhero sequel, saying it was like acting with a “gun in his mouth”. The actor has rarely worked in Hollywood blockbusters, and tellingly, he hasn’t appeared in such films since The Dark World. Although he claims to have enjoyed working on Gone in 60 Seconds with Nicolas Cage, he loathed working on both The Dark World and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra a few years earlier. Seeming thoroughly annoyed with himself for agreeing to do those movies, Eccleston said, “I really paid for being a whore those times”.

His role in the Thor sequel is merely a career outlier, of course. Eccleston, best known for his excellent albeit tragically short-lived performance as Doctor Who, is a very, very good actor who generally works in interesting, character-driven projects, so this terrible role and his flat performance is in no way a reflection of him. Besides, he was covered in make-up, so most won’t have recognised him, and many have probably forgotten he was even in it, so that’s something.
