The worst audition of Sandra Bullock’s career: “It was horrible, it was so bad”

Hollywood can be a tough industry to crack, there’s no doubting that, but it’s certainly reassuring for many budding actors to learn that countless stars have bombed auditions throughout their careers. It happens to the best of them – even Oscar-winning actors like Sandra Bullock

Sometimes, an actor just isn’t right for the role. Perhaps they’re not adequately prepared, or they’re simply not what the filmmaker is looking for, but this doesn’t mean they’re doomed for failure. Bullock knows a thing or two about bad auditions, and she’s not afraid to admit that she has tried her hand at securing several parts in the past that have resulted in her walking away wishing she’d never bothered.

Auditions can surely be humiliating and nerve-wracking experiences, so you can hardly blame actors for the times they’ve left that audition room, head in hands, feeling as though they’ve made a fool of themselves.

It’s often the case that an actor will spend the early years of their career auditioning for any role they can get their hands on, even if the part isn’t the kind they’d usually go for. Sometimes, a role is simply a job – a step closer towards success – and a chance to meet filmmakers and other industry professionals who could be their ticket to a greater opportunity.

Bullock certainly found herself struggling to break through into Hollywood straight away, initially acting in various student films in the hopes of gaining experience in the world of cinema. She eventually moved away from amateur films and into the world of indie cinema and television during the late 1980s and early 1990s, but it was the blockbuster Speed that gave her the big break she deserved.

The action movie was a hit, but Bullock proved her love of playing funny characters with subsequent roles in rom-coms and comedy dramas like While You Were Sleeping, 28 Days, and Miss Congeniality. Asserting herself as a lover of both intense action-led roles and more lighthearted parts, Bullock soon became one of the most profitable stars of her generation.

Yet, Bullock’s career might not have been half as successful if she had landed a different film in 1994 instead of Speed. While the latter proved Bullock’s ability to lead blockbusters and work alongside established stars like Dennis Hopper, the film she believes to be her worst-ever audition ended up becoming a box-office flop and a critical failure.

Bullock revealed, “God the worst audition that I ever had, I know what it is, it was for this film called Mixed Nuts, it was Steve Martin, I kept saying, ‘I can’t play this type of comedy, I can’t do it, I can’t do it.’” The film was directed by Nora Ephron, but sadly, it failed on every front, making it onto various ‘worst of the year’ lists. The movie starred Rita Wilson, Juliette Lewis, Adam Sandler, and Madeline Kahn alongside Martin, but as far as Christmas films go, it wasn’t exactly memorable.

“The girl was pregnant, and I think Juliette Lewis played it. I was so bad, I walked in with a pillow in my shirt, and I knocked over everything, and I kept having to stop, and I looked at these people just saying, ‘shoot me, have me leave, don’t make me do this again.’ It was the worst audition I ever had. It was horrible. It was so bad. And I hope it’s not on tape somewhere, it’s horrible.”

While Bullock looks back on the audition with a cold shiver, she knows that these terrible experiences have shaped her career for the better. “We all have them at the beginning. I gave horrible auditions left and right, I made horrible choices, I did horrible little student films, you know, but how else are you supposed to learn? There’s no learning ground for film,” she concluded.
