Wong Kar-wai, the Hong Kong mastermind behind Chungking Express, and In the Mood for Love, has released the first poster and trailer for his long-awaited TV series and film Blossoms Shanghai.
In the works for many years, the project which will be released first as a series, before being shortened to feature film length, is an adaptation of the novel Blossoms by Jin Yucheng, and tells the story of a young entrepreneur finding wealth and romance during China’s economic boom of the 1990s. Described by the director himself as “the third part of In the Mood for Love and 2046,” returning to Shanghai for Wong Kar-wai has been a “deeply personal venture” working alongside award-winning Shanghainese screenwriter Qin Wen to complete the project.
Starring Hu Ge, Ma Yili, Kris Wu, and Xin Zhilei, the film also features visual supervision from the award-winning cinematographer Peter Pau, with previous credits on John Woo’s 1989 film The Killer, as well as Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It should come as little surprise, then, that the latest international poster for the film is in itself a wonderful work of art, depicting a man sitting on top of a Shanghai rooftop amid an inspired, ethereal cityscape. The international trailer that was also released, captured in golden sepia colours, tells us the tone the director may be headed in but is otherwise indecipherable and yet to be translated.
Speaking in 2020 Wong Kar-wai commented: “With the series, I would like to invite the audience to immerse in the intrigues of Shanghai and its inhabitants in the early 1990s, an exciting time that paved the way for the prosperity of modern Shanghai.”
With a clear, distinct vision for the project, it seems as though the directors latest film will add to his ever-impressive artistic work, extracting a certain beauty from every city he depicts, a tangible sense of identity from his characters. We may have to wait until 2022, but Blossoms Shanghai will be essential viewing.
“Blossoms Shanghai tells the story of an enigmatic, self-made millionaire, Mr. Bao (Hu Ge), and his journey of reinvention from a young opportunist with a troubled past to the heights of the gilded city of Shanghai,” the official film synopsis reads. “Set against the backdrop of massive economic growth in 1990’s Shanghai, the series unveils the glamour that follows his dazzling wealth and his entanglement with four fabulous women that represent the pursuits of his life: adventure, honour, love and innocence.”
