WineMom share promising debut single, ‘Blood Moon’
When it comes to a new year, why waste a second? It never really made much sense to me why the music industry closes up shop for basically the entirety of December and January, just as listeners are finally and irreparably sick of their old playlists and favourite albums. Now is the time for something new. Now is the time to set your intentions and start as you mean to go on. WineMom are brave enough to answer that call.
In the final days of the year, as everyone put their out-of-office on and slipped into a mulled wine coma, Dublin’s newest band launched themselves into the world with their debut single. Putting everything in place to seemingly hit the ground running in this new year, ‘Blood Moon’ was their introductory statement.
For a band that only played their first-ever gig in September, it’s a powerful opening remark. Much like the actual event of a blood moon, the track is mysterious, seductive and beautifully strange. With the same kind of nostalgic rock energy that fuels bands like The Lemon Twigs, the track has that winning mix of ’70s classic guitars, a slight country twang and the rolling melodies of indie’s structure.
But WineMom also adds in a refreshing modernism. It’s hard to put a finger on exactly what the quality is, but there is something in their lead singer’s vocals that instantly places them in the ranks of Lime Garden and Divorce. Seemingly taking timeless inspirations and handling them with a modern nonchalance, they’re not trying to be anyone else or do anything in particular; just make music.
Obviously, there is only so much you can tell about a band from a single track. The Dublin four-piece outfit remain pretty much a mystery, concentrating on music instead of how to pitch it, gigging around their hometown and honing their chops. Recently picked to play a ones-to-watch showcase at the iconic live music haunt, Whelans, they’re clearly making waves in the city. The quality of ‘Blood Moon’ suggests they’re another diamond being forged in the thriving Irish music scene.
Hopefully, their busy live schedule will only keep boosting their recorded quality up and up as future singles come in. If there’s a lesson to be learnt from some of 2023’s brightest talents, it’s that in the DIY scene of today, cutting your teeth through gigging will help you have a lasting bite.
It’s early doors, though. It would be wrong to hear one song and declare a band the next big thing. But as the nostalgic energy of ‘Blood Moon’ only seems to get better with each repeat, our ears are pricked for what’s to come next from the Dublin band.
